Emergency Departments as Critical Intervention Points
Emergency departments frequently serve as initial points of care for adolescents experiencing substance use–related harm. These encounters present time-limited but meaningful opportunities for identification, intervention, and referral.
The Sandelich Lab studies how substance use screening is implemented in emergency settings and examines downstream outcomes following identification. Our work focuses on improving early recognition and strengthening pathways to follow-up care.
By optimizing screening and referral processes, emergency departments can support continuity of care rather than isolated crisis response.
